This past summer local new sources in Savannah and throughout our state released data about the West Nile Virus. They asked us to be vigilant about doing all the right things to keep the mosquito population in check in our backyards and around our businesses. During the summer we had no human reported cases of the West Nile. Only reports about mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus.

But on August 29th, 2018 we were told by The Georgia Department of Health that there now have been seven confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus so far this year, including one death in the state of Georgia. In Savannah, Pooler, Richmond Hill, Bluffton, and Hilton Head we need to take appropriate actions to take care of our families.

Here are 5 facts you need to know about West Nile virus.

  • People typically get West Nile virus after being bitten by an infected mosquito that became infected after feeding on an infected bird. The mosquitos that transmit West Nile are of the Culex genus.
  • It’s possible you may not know you have it, because most people don’t develop symptoms. Make sure you know the symptoms of West Nile and check with your doctor if necessary.
  • If you do get sick, common symptoms could range from a mild flu-like illness – high fever and chills, headache, backache, joint and muscle pain, pain behind your eyes, and a sense of the “I don’t feel goods”— to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, cough, sore throat, flushed face, red eyes, and swollen lymph nodes. If you think you may have West Nile, report to your doctor as soon as possible. Don’t delay.
  • Your risk of developing severe disease increases with age and with serious or chronic medical conditions like a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. So a word to the wise, if you have a weak immune system stay indoors during dawn and dusk and use insect repellent.
  • There is no licensed vaccine for humans and no specific treatment for West Nile virus. We can only treat the symptoms and provide supportive care. So prevention is your best defense.
